Photos Included in Surf Lessons in Portugal: What to Expect

Photographer captures a beginner riding a wave

In Portugal, photos are usually not a standard part of a surf lesson. At most schools they are an optional paid add-on, or a perk of a specific package, and you often have to ask for them when you book. This guide covers what “photos included” can mean, what a photo add-on typically costs, and how to leave with pictures you will want to keep. It also covers the best spots around Peniche.

TL;DR

  • Equipment, a certified instructor and insurance are the standard inclusions. Professional photography is often a separate service, typically around €30 to €50 depending on group size and duration.

  • Ask three things before you pay: who takes the photos, how many you get, and whether they are raw files or edited.

  • Photos show memories. Video coaching helps you improve. Decide which one you want.

  • A dedicated photographer, shooting from the water or a good vantage point, usually beats an instructor trying to coach and shoot at once.

  • Our lesson prices start at €40 for a beginner lesson. Ask us about photo options when you book.

What “photos included” really means

The phrase covers very different things. Before you compare two lessons, work out which of these you are being offered.

  • Someone on the beach with a phone. An instructor or staff member takes a few pictures from the sand. They are free and casual, and the results depend on distance and light.

  • A shared gallery. A photographer shoots the whole class and uploads the frames to a gallery you can browse. You may get dozens or hundreds of images. Many schools send raw files, not a curated, edited selection.

  • A water photographer. A photographer swims out with a housed camera. This gives the closest, most dramatic angles and is usually paid.

  • Video analysis. Footage is filmed so your instructor can review your stance and timing with you afterward.

A gallery of 300 unedited frames and a handful of edited shots are not the same product, even if both are labeled “photos included”.

Why photos are rarely free

A surf lesson is a safety job first. A typical group lesson lasts 90 to 120 minutes, with ratios commonly capped between 1:4 and 1:8, depending on the school. An instructor standing in the white water watching several beginners is not also framing a shot.

Good surf photography is its own skill. Photographers read waves and light, and position themselves at the right break at the right tide, rather than snapping from the sand. That takes time and equipment, which is why it is normally priced separately.

So when a school says photos are included, it is reasonable to ask how that works in practice. Sometimes the answer is a real photographer. Sometimes it is a few snapshots.

As a benchmark, group lessons in Portugal run about €25 to €60, and private lessons €70 to €150. Photography on top is often €30 to €50, depending on how many people are in the shoot and for how long.

Questions to ask before you book

A few minutes of asking saves disappointment on the beach. Send these by message or raise them at booking.

  1. Who takes the photos? An instructor, a staff member or an independent photographer?

  2. From where? The beach, a viewpoint, or the water? Shots from the sand at a beginner break are far away.

  3. How many images, and when do they arrive? Same day, next day, or a week later?

  4. Raw or edited? Raw means unprocessed files, possibly hundreds of them. Edited means a curated selection.

  5. Can you keep the full-resolution files? Some galleries only show previews.

  6. What if the conditions are poor? If the photographer cannot shoot, is the fee refunded?

  7. Does it cover everyone in the group? In a class of six, you may be in only a few frames.

Photos or video coaching?

These get confused a lot. Experienced Portuguese schools tend to separate surf photography, which captures memories, from video coaching, which is used to improve technique.

If you are on your first or second lesson, photos are the better buy. You will mostly be popping up, wobbling and grinning, and a good shot of the first stand-up is worth having.

If you already stand up and want to fix a late pop-up or a stiff stance, video helps more. Watching yourself on screen shows posture and timing that a single frame cannot. Ask your instructor to go through the clips with you rather than only handing over the file.

Where the good shots happen

Location matters as much as the camera. A few places near Peniche are known to photographers.

For learners, the sensible plan is to take your lesson where the school considers it safe and suitable for your level. Then, if you want dramatic images, book a separate photo session at one of the photogenic breaks. If you simply want a memory, a clear, close shot of you riding white water at a beginner beach is perfect.

Taking your own photos

If a friend or family member will shoot from the beach, a few settings help.

  • Avoid automatic or sports modes where you can. Use shutter priority at 1/800s to 1/1000s or faster to freeze the action.

  • Shoot from a fixed position, ideally on a tripod, and use burst mode. Several frames let you pick the exact moment of the pop-up.

  • Use the longest lens you can get. Beginners ride close to shore, but the distance is still greater than it looks.

  • Agree on a spot with your instructor so the photographer knows roughly where you will be.

  • Keep phones in a waterproof pouch and out of the surf.

Photo booking works similarly elsewhere. If you are weighing a trip further afield, surfing tours in Phuket, Thailand show how tours are typically arranged there, but the same questions apply: who shoots, how many images, and what the price covers.

Our point of view

We have taught surfing at Praia Areia Branca since 2001, and one thing has not changed: people remember the first wave, and they want proof of it. We understand why “photos included” is such a popular search.

But we would rather be honest than promise a gallery we cannot guarantee. During a lesson, our instructors are watching the water and the people in it. That is the job, and it is what keeps a group safe. We think photography is worth doing properly, with someone who is paid to do it.

Our advice is practical. Tell us at booking that photos matter to you, and tell us the day you most want them. If it is your first lesson, we can help you plan around tide and conditions so the shots are worth having. If a family member wants to take pictures, we will show them where to stand on our small beach, where it is easy to watch from the sand, the deck or a nearby cafe.

And put the camera down for part of the day. The best part of a lesson is the feeling of the board catching the wave, and no photo captures that.

FAQ

Are photos included in surf lessons in Portugal?

Usually not as a standard inclusion. Equipment, a certified instructor and insurance are the norm, while photography is often a paid extra. Some premium packages or video coaching sessions include it, so ask when you reserve.

How much do surf lesson photos cost in Portugal?

A typical add-on is around €30 to €50, depending on group size and shoot length, according to one 2026 price guide. Independent photographers price differently, often per image or per private session. Always confirm the current price with the provider.

Should I hire an independent surf photographer?

If you want high-quality images, it is often worth it. A dedicated photographer positions for the right break, tide and light, which an instructor busy teaching cannot do. For a simple keepsake of your first lesson, a few beach snapshots may be enough.

What is the difference between raw and edited photos?

Raw files are unprocessed images, often delivered in large numbers through a download link. Edited photos are a smaller, curated set with color and crop adjusted. Ask which one you are getting before you pay.
